Insights 2012
Leadership Insights in 2012 have been created around the needs of our social investment leaders. Forums will address common knowledge gaps and dialogue sessions will facilitate constructive conversation between provincial government and corporate South Africa.

Forum 2: King III made easy
King III places increased emphasis on sustainability and its inseparable interface with strategy and control in overall entity governance – ‘integrated governance’. It calls for integrated reporting (reporting of financial information with sustainability issues of social, economic and environmental impacts). What implications does this have for how you assess and report on your corporate social investments?
Join a lively discussion where experts will unpack the sustainability requirements of King III and debate its relevance to the non profit sector:
- Tuesday, 5th June in Cape Town at the BoE Boardroom, 5th Floor, Clock Tower Precint, V&A Waterfront
- Wednesday, 6th June in Johannesburg at BoE, 135 Rivonia Road, Sandown
- Thursday, 7th June in Durban at the SASA Committee Room, South African Sugar Association, 170 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe
About the speakers
CAPE TOWN
Richard Rosenthal of Richard Rosenthal Attorneys is an attorney practising in Cape Town who specialises in public benefit, development and human rights law. Richard considers King III to be largely unattainable for most non-profit organisations in South Africa – although conceding its value in terms of fiduciary responsibilities – and believes that it has far greater legitimacy and relevance for corporates and CSI practitioners.
JOHANNESBURG
Mags Shapiro runs a consultancy called Social Capital working partly with the corporate world making businesses more socially and environmentally conscious, with a special focus on GRI-aligned Sustainability Reporting and carbon footprint measurement and reduction strategies; and partly in the non-profit world making NPOs more business-like with a special focus on the application of King III.
DURBAN
Nicole Copley (BA LLB, LLM) has 19 years’ legal experience in corporate and non profit law. Since 1996, Nicole has had her own consultancy, working almost exclusively with NGOs. Her latest venture is in governance training for NGOs, collaborating with Mags Shapiro on the impact of the King III commission report on the NGO sector in South Africa.
