julia feature (2)The SAIIN Conference 2015 promises an exceptional line-up of speakers at the region’s leading impact investing event.

One of the experts who will address the SAIIN delegates is Julia Balandina-Jaquier, a seasoned impact investor and a recognised expert in this area, with over 20 years of investment management and consulting experience in emerging and developed markets.

Dr Balandina is the author of a Guide to Impact Investing for Family Offices and High Net Worth Individuals, a book that provides a pragmatic set of guidelines, concrete tools, personal stories, and examples aimed to help those interested in managing their wealth for impact and profit to develop and implement such strategies successfully and to do the most good.

She believes that impact investing is an exciting tool for making a difference.

“It allows you to combine financial and philanthropic objectives, to align investment management with the values of the capital owner,” she says. “Impact investing is particularly relevant for Africa as it can catalyse positive systemic change by using not only the capital but the entrepreneurial spirit and skills of wealthy families (many of whom are wealth generators with active family businesses) to support sustainable, market-based solutions to many problems Africa is facing and create a healthy ecosystem of socially driven businesses.”

As the SAIIN Conference 2015 approaches, Dr Balandina looks forward to an event that provides delegates with “a combination of inspiration, some practical learning and expanded network of likeminded people”.

Dr Balandina began her career at McKinsey and subsequently held senior positions at ABB Financial Services and AIG Global Investment Group, where she managed the AIG’s European direct private equity business.

A combination of a passion for investing with a joint goal of social impact and financial return resulted in her active involvement in the development of the impact investment market since 2005, when she pioneered one of the first institutional impact investment funds (within AIG), which she led until 2010.

Dr Balandina then founded an independent impact investment consultancy, where she has advised some of the largest European families, private foundations, international banks and the Swiss Government, in designing and implementing impact investment strategies and funds. In addition, she has helped socially-driven businesses achieve investment-readiness.

In addition to holding a number of non-executive positions, including serving on the Investment Committee, Board and chairing the Audit Committee of SIFEM, she currently a Senior Adviser to Willows Investments (an impact investment vehicle of S. Brenninkmeijer).

In the academic sphere, Dr Balandina teaches impact investing and social entrepreneurship at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. She has been a guest lecturer at Yale and is a member of various industry task forces and expert committees. She holds an MBA and PhD in finance from SPUEF, has completed an executive education program at IMD, Lausanne, and is a Certified Financial Analyst.
